Dressing Your Little Ones for the Perfect Family Photoshoot

A family photoshoot is an opportunity to capture, and cherish, a moment in time. Selecting the perfect outfits for your children will make the occasion perfect. At October Rose we understand the importance of these moments and we're here to assist you in choosing the best children’s attire that combines comfort, style, and timeless charm.

Coordinated Colours with a Touch of Unity
While the days of the entire family wearing matching outfits may be behind us, having matching colours can still be a part of your wardrobe selection. Opting for a coordinated colour palette featuring two or three primary colours while integrating neutrals like beige, white, or navy is a strategy that allows individual personalities to shine through whilst maintaining a cohesive look. Our Florence Dress and Arlo Shirt and Oliver Shorts are perfect examples of how introducing a light palette can create unity without duplicating style. This ensures that each outfit harmonizes beautifully in family photographs.

Comfort Meets Style
When it comes to children's clothing, comfort should never be compromised for style. Look for outfits that are not only beautiful but also comfortable and suitable for the season. Soft fabrics like cotton or linen are ideal for younger children and babies, as they are gentle on the skin and reduce the risk of irritation. For a winter shoot, layer with stylish cardigans and winter boots. The Arthur Romper and Rose Dress pair wonderfully for siblings, providing both comfort and a coordinated look.

Timeless Over Trendy
Family photos are timeless keepsakes, choosing outfits with a classic appeal is important. Avoid overly trendy pieces that may feel outdated as fashions change. This includes busy prints, and shirts or dresses with branded logos. For girls, a classic neutral dress can work wonders. For boys, think about chinos or linen pants with a crisp shirt. These choices will ensure that your photos remain ageless.

Accessories to Accentuate
Accessories should be understated yet impactful. A dainty bow to complement or contrast your colour palate, a pair of suspenders, or perhaps a bow tie. Choose accessories that complement the outfit and don’t distract from your child's natural cuteness.

Expert opinion

We spoke to Ashleigh who is the owner and photographer of Brisbane based Fika Lifestyle Photography. Ashleigh works closely with families to style for the perfect photo.

Ashleigh's biggest piece of advice for dressing children:
"Dress comfortable. Be able to move around and play with the kids in what you’re wearing. For the kids, avoid ruffles around the shoulders, they push up into faces."

Ashleigh's 'What not to do'
"No brand logos or completely matching. For example, all white shirts and denim jeans."

Extra Advice:
"They’re your photos. You want to display them around your home. You want to be comfortable and happy. Trust your photographers advice, but you don’t want to look at your photos and think, that’s not me."
